Entombment is the interment of human remains in a tomb or crypt. It involves
placing a casket or cremation urn in a crypt or columbarium niche within a mausoleum. The crypt or niche is then sealed and a memorial is added. Interment rights are required.
A mausoleum is a large building designed to provide above-ground
interment.
Historically, mausoleum entombment
was thought to be only for the very wealthy. Community mausoleums have
made above-ground burial or entombment an affordable option. Through
modern architecture, technology and methods of construction, we have
been able to bring one of the world's finest forms of burial to a price
where it is comparable or equal to ground interment.
Crypts are designed to hold casketed remains. Following a casket
entombment, the crypt is sealed, and a granite front is
attached.
There are different kinds of crypts, including:
-
Single crypts designed for one entombment only
- Companion crypts, which are double crypts permitting two entombments
Most
mausoleums are built four, five and sometimes six crypts high. The
price of the crypt will depend on its type and location. For example,
upper-level crypts are less expensive than those located at eye level.
Most of our mausoleums offer a
selection of crypts from which to choose, priced to meet various budgets.
A columbarium is an arrangement of niches designed to hold urns
containing cremated remains. At Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, we have a wide selection of niches including a free-standing columbarium, indoor stained glass window niches,
niche walls, niche features in our large mausoleums, benches, and a cremation garden. Following an urn
entombment, a niche front of granite or glass is
attached.
In addition, it is possible to place one or more cremation urns inside a crypt. All that is required is the permission of the interment rights holder(s). The size of the crypt front, however, may limit the number of memorial inscriptions that may be placed on it. Please contact our office for specific information regarding the particular crypt you are inquiring about.
For outdoor niches, bronze memorials in the form of a nameplate are attached to the granite front of each niche. In addition, ceramic pictures or bronze emblems may be placed on
crypt and niche fronts. These emblems and pictures must be ordered and installed through our office. For glass fronted memorials inside our chapel, an engraved nameplate is added to our directory in front of the window.
Mt. Olivet Memorial Park also offers a wide variety of memorial
services and products that may be associated with an entombment.
When you purchase interment rights, you purchase the right to designate
who may be entombed or interred in the space purchased, as well as the right to
place a memorial where permitted. The crypt or urn space itself remains
the property and the responsibility of the cemetery. A portion of the
purchase price of all interment rights is contributed to the Care and
Maintenance Fund. A portion of the purchase price may also be
contributed to the Supplementary Care Fund. Income from both funds is
used to provide regular care and maintenance activities at the
cemeteries.
Please contact
the cemetery office for an appointment to discuss
entombment. Our Service Co-ordinators will be pleased to provide full
information about the forms of entombment, interment rights, and the
many options and services available for those who choose entombment for
the final disposition of remains.
All arrangements for entombment can be made in advance. By planning ahead,
you have the opportunity to consider the many options available as well
as to make an informed decision about your funeral and cemetery
arrangements.
